15-06-2006 ChangingWorlds co-founder shortlisted for Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2006

Dublin, Ireland, Thursday 15th June, 2006, Professor Barry Smyth, co-founder and chief technical officer of ChangingWorlds, a leading Irish owned software development company, is one of 24 finalists shortlisted for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 award. Professor Smyth, who co-founded ChangingWorlds with Paul Cotter in 1999, is nominated in this year’s list in the International Entrepreneur of the Year category.

“The Ernst and Young Awards have always provided an excellent platform to highlight the achievements of Irish entrepreneurs and it is an honor to be included in this year’s shortlist,” says Smyth. “The Irish software sector is exceptionally entrepreneurial. There are literally hundreds of innovative Irish software companies making names for themselves internationally across a diverse range of software products and services,” he continues. “Having come through a particularly bruising time around 2000, not only is it great to see some outstanding software companies shortlisted this year, I consider it a particular achievement to be among them”.

This year’s Ernst and Young programme attracted over 150 nominations, which were shortlisted to 24 finalists. The shortlist was decided by an independent panel of judges, chaired by Denis O’Brien and is made up of 8 nominees respectively for each of three categories of entrepreneurs: Emerging Entrepreneur Of The Year®, Industry Entrepreneur Of The Year® and International Entrepreneur Of The Year®. Finalists in each category are interviewed as part of a three-part series to appear on RTE in September. The winner will be announced at a televised Awards Ceremony on September 28th 2006, held at City West Hotel, Dublin.

“ChangingWorlds is a company which developed from UCD’s campus company development programme and continues to maintain very strong links with the university. This relationship is key to our continued ability to innovate and expand our product range,” continues Smyth. “I am delighted to see a company whose technology was originally fostered in a university setting, gain industry recognition through a high profile award nomination such as the Ernst and Young Awards. Our universities are a fantastic source of innovation and universities like UCD are really making great strides in fostering the development of an innovation culture. ChangingWorlds’ ongoing commitment to innovation and its market success is a product of this culture”.

In recognition of the world’s largest emerging market, the focus of this year’s Awards is on China. This is very timely for ChangingWorlds which will exhibit at CommunicAsia 2006, Asia’s most successful wireless telecommunications trade show, taking place in Singapore from June 20th to June 23rd. “The focus on China and indeed Asia generally is appropriate to any international services company today and ChangingWorlds sees Asia as having a huge role to play in the future of the company,” comments Smyth.
